Why can stainless steel still get rust spots? And what can you do about it?

The cause of rust formation on stainless steel bollards explained, and how to prevent it

Stainless steel bollards are known for their luxurious appearance and long lifespan. If rust spots do appear, it usually doesn't mean there's a quality defect.

Stainless steel is rustproof, but not maintenance-free

Stainless steel is actually rust-resistant. This means that the material is highly resistant to corrosion, but not completely impervious to external influences. Especially with prolonged outdoor use, small rust stains can appear.<!--en--><!--en-->The most common cause is flash rust: microscopic metal particles from the air adhere to the surface and begin to oxidize. Additionally, acid rain, sea air, accumulated dirt, and moisture in seams can damage the protective chromium layer. Aggressive cleaning agents such as chlorine or abrasive sponges can also damage the surface. This is a natural reaction to environmental influences and not a manufacturing defect.

How to prevent and remove rust

Regular maintenance prevents light tarnishing from developing into visible rust spots. Periodically clean the posts with water and a soft cloth to remove dirt and metal particles. Always avoid abrasive materials or chlorine-based agents.

For intensive outdoor use, for example at events or entrances, we recommend storing the posts dry if possible during prolonged rain. If rust spots are visible, they can usually be easily removed with a suitable stainless steel cleaner.

Professional maintenance extends the lifespan

Good maintenance is essential to keep stainless steel queuing posts looking presentable. Especially in locations with many visitors or varying weather conditions, periodic cleaning pays off. This not only maintains their appearance but also extends the lifespan of the material.

For simple and safe maintenance, we have put together the ForFlows Cleankit. This kit contains a specially developed stainless steel cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth that cleans the surface without damaging the protective layer. Ideal for professional use in hospitality, events, and retail.
